Answers to common questions about BetterHalve. Can't find what you need — just email us.
Getting started
Go to Settings and tap Invite next to Partner, then share the link with your partner. Each invite has a 6-character code and is valid for 48 hours.
Your partner taps the link to join, or enters the code when they choose to join a household while setting up the app.
You can create an account and set up your household on your own, but the app is designed for two people. Expenses, balances, insights and wealth are all built around a shared household — they work best once your partner joins.
BetterHalve supports Sign in with Apple and Google Sign-In. No new password to manage — just tap and go.
Expenses & splitting
When adding an expense, you choose who paid and how to split it. There are three options:
50/50 — equal split, the default.
Custom — enter a fixed amount for each person.
Percentage — split by percentage.
The running balance updates immediately for both of you.
Recurring expenses are bills or subscriptions that repeat automatically — weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly. Set them up once in Settings → Recurring Payments and BetterHalve adds the expense for you on each due date.
They convert from your original currency at the live rate each time they're posted, so they stay accurate even if exchange rates shift.
Tap "Settle up" from the home screen or the + button. Enter the amount transferred and confirm. The balance updates instantly for both partners. Settlements appear in your activity feed alongside expenses.
Wealth
Wealth tracks what you own and owe — property, savings, investments, retirement, vehicles, crypto, loans and more — and adds it up into your net worth.
Switch between Together, You and your partner to see your combined position or each person's share. The Trend view shows how your net worth changes over time as you update values.
Each asset or debt can belong to one of you or be shared, with a percentage split for joint items. Ownership only changes how each person's share is counted — both partners can see and edit everything on the Wealth tab.
Yes. Set a shared net-worth target and an optional date, and BetterHalve tracks your progress toward it and lets you both know when you pass a milestone.
Currencies
Your household can use any of 16 currencies: ZAR, USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, JPY, CHF, HKD, SGD, NOK, SEK, DKK, NZD, CNY and BRL.
You can log an expense in any of these, or in Bitcoin, and it's converted to your household currency at the live rate when you enter it.
Go to Settings → Currency. The currency can only be changed before any expenses, settlements or recurring payments have been added, so pick the one you'll keep when you set up your household.
Account & data
Go to Settings → Delete Account. Your profile, invites and any household you use on your own are deleted. Expenses you shared with a partner stay available to them, and anything on the Wealth tab owned only by you is removed. This can't be undone, and you may need to sign in again first.
If you'd prefer to request deletion by email, contact us at [email protected].
If you've already been using BetterHalve on your own, your expenses, settlements and recurring payments move into your partner's household when you join, so nothing is lost.
Your data is stored in Google Firebase Firestore with encryption in transit and at rest. Access is restricted to you and your partner — no other users can see your expenses, balance or wealth.
